What Drives People Away From Websites?

Hello there, my name is Connor. I am an enthusiastic web development and design student at Dauphin County Technical School that is studying and researching different ways online platforms can be influenced by what you put in. Today, I’ll tell you about the things that drive people away. Be sure to check out my other blogs about web development too.

The Survey

For this, blog, I had the brilliant idea of asking my peers and friends what they hate most about trashy websites. I asked around throughout my school too and gained a thorough understanding of how people felt. This here is a visual representation of their feedback from the survey. I hope readers like yourself can learn from it and strengthen your websites and content for your viewers!

Bad Spelling or Grammar:

One of the things people will hate the most about a site would be terrible spelling or grammar. Nothing irks me about a platform more than spelling or grammar errors. I, for one, find it universally annoying. I can’t count the number of times I’ve left a site simply because I hated reading through their content. I mean, if you’re trying to sell me something I don’t need, at least make it readable. This is, in my opinion, the most important thing to look out for in your online presence.

Bad images/content

This is another thing that really gets on my nerves. While it might not be the highest on the list, Content quality could make or break your website. Whether you’ve noticed it or not, all websites, big or small, depend on the quality of their images, videos, and other visual media in their websites. What do you think would happen to Youtube if it could only give you 240p videos? I sure wouldn’t stick around if there was a website that offered better looking videos. I mean, why suffer with something worse when an amazing website is just a search away with all the content you want, at a better quality. This is also true for things like repair services. Are you going to trust a low quality image for a bathroom repair, or a high quality image of a shiny, perfect bathroom that functions amazingly. The number one thing people look to on your websites is the images and other content. Content quality is something that might make or break your website so make sure it’s up to the standards of your competitors or better.

Bright Colors or Flashing Lights

Now, you might not believe it, but this is the thing you need to watch out most for, according to my peers at least. Now I can see where they’re coming from, don’t get me wrong. I would hate it if I went to a website and I was suddenly flash banged by an assault team of rainbows. It would make me hate having eyes. And there’s also the fact that flashing lights and bright colors make things seem unprofessional and shady. If I were to search something up and come upon a page that looks like a disco, no way am I ever trusting anything on that website. This is definitely something you want to avoid if you plan on expanding your business or organization using the internet.

Small text size

This next one probably won’t drive them away, but it will make them annoyed with your platform. And if this was combined with terrible spelling, it would surely drive away 80-90% of the people who see your content. When the aim of your site is to have people read about a product or service you offer, it is paramount that you make sure they can actually see and read what you have to say. I would definitely hate having to change my zoom size for a single site.

Excessive ads

Now, I’m sure that everyone can agree, even when there are only a few ads on a website, they are extremely annoying. What could be worse than a website that is filled to the brim with ads. Over the years I’ve scrolled through the internet, and I’ve encountered tons of websites like this and as soon as I ever saw these insane amounts of ads, there was a 70% chance I would just leave and go to a different website. Nothing is more annoying to me and other readers than a website with a waterfall of ads.
